Training Runs Presented by OrthoNow Continue This Saturday

April 19, 2012 at 7:54 AM

The 2012 Mountain Goat Training Runs presented by OrthoNow continue this Saturday at The MOST in Armory Square. Over 1000 training bands have been sold for the series so far. Week 5 is the big week, the longest run in the series, 8 miles.

Now you may ask, why 8 miles, and not the whole course? For the same reason you don't run 26.2 miles in preparation for a marathon, you don't need to run all 10 miles unless it is something you do on a normal basis.

In fact, 20 miles in marathon training is the standard maximum distance for running a marathon, 76% of the race distance. The 8 mile run this week is 80% of the total distance you will run on race day in the Goat.

So here we go. We follow the course as usual, right through the turn up Stolp Ave. On the way up Stolp, we'll make a left on Clairmonte and into Onondaga Park. From there you'll run the rest of the course, including Colvin Street.

This year we are charging a one-time $5 fee for the training run series. Pay once and train all 6 weeks. With your fee and a signed waiver, you will receive a special wrist band designed for the training runs. You must have the wrist band to participate.Wrist bands will be available before the run this week.

upstate_ortho.gifRunners are responsible for their own safety and must obey all traffic laws. That means stopping at all traffic signals or stop signs and obeying anyinstruction by Syracuse Police. Runners should not be running more than 2 across, in particular up Onondaga Avenue where two-way traffic is often busy on Saturday.

There will be three water stops with water and energy drinks. The first water stop is at the 1.5 mile mark at Onondaga and Bellevue. The second stop is at the 3.75 mile mark at Salina and Colvin. The third stop is at the Rose Garden in Thornden Park at mile 6. It will be manned by the young guys and gals of The Good Ole Boys Junior Bassmasters Fishing Club. Please thank them as you go by. Three stops in one 8-mile run may be more work than the training run.

Here is a map of our Week 5 route, which will be 8 miles.

Doors open at The MOST at 7:15, instructions are at 7:55 and the run begins at 8.

Don't forget to throw in a dollar for the MOST to thank them for making their facility open for our training runs.
